80-year-old bartender celebrates 50 years of service at McGillin’s Olde Ale House – NBC10 Philadelphia

Opened in 1860, McGillin’s Olde Ale House has been the setting for countless stories.

It is the longest continuously operating bar in Philadelphia and a popular meeting place for tourists and locals alike.

And according to John Doyle, it’s the best bar in Philadelphia.

“Oh, it’s just the best bar in Center City,” Doyle said. “It’s the best bar in the whole city.”

Doyle should know, because he has worked there for 50 years.

“When I came here, I was a customer,” Doyle explains. “I came out of the Army, you know, just came on Friday nights. I came in, had a few drinks and met a few guys.”

Doyle served in Korea after graduating from school and receiving a draft notice in the mail. He first came to McGillin’s in April 1974.

One night the bouncer asked him to watch the door while he used the toilet.

The rest is history.

“If there’s another word to describe it, I can’t think of it,” Doyle said. “I love this job. I mean, I love the people.”

Doyle had various jobs over the years, but in the evenings he was always behind the legendary bar. With the extra money he was able to support his family – a wife and two children.

Now, at the age of 80, Doyle is celebrating 50 years of service and the bar is offering everyone the chance to celebrate with him by offering special events and discounts leading up to St. Patrick’s Day.

Owner Chris Mullins said Doyle was not only an exemplary employee, but also a good friend from day one.

“A great Irish storyteller. If you get him going, he can tell stories,” Mullins said. “He has a talent for just enjoying life.”

When they are together, Mullins and Doyle feel like they are transported back to the 70s – and tell one story after another until they are both doubled over with laughter.

While Doyle admits his schedule has gotten slimmer over the years, he says he has no plans to throw in the towel.

“It’s a privilege that they let me come here every Saturday and do my thing,” Doyle said of his once-a-week shift. “So it’s just a pleasure to come here every Saturday and just have a great day.”

If you visit the bar on a Saturday afternoon, ask for John Doyle. Then order your drink and a story to go with it.

“I mean, I don’t feel my age,” Doyle said. “I may look it, but I don’t feel it. That’s another story.”
