Korean ensemble performed in Astana

The Korea National Contemporary Dance Company successfully performed on its tour in Astana and presented the choreographic work jungle in the Grand Hall of the Astana Opera on August 10, El.kz quotes astanaopera.kz.

The Korean Cultural Center of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea supported the tour. This unique performance captivated the audience with its lively and instinctive movements that reflected the vitality of the wild.

The production of jungle is based on a study of atypical movements developed by Kim Sungyong, artistic director of the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company. As a result, the audience saw on stage a choreographic work in which creation and destruction, the hidden and the obvious, stillness and movement, relaxation and tension coexist. All this created the atmosphere of the jungle, which is so similar to our everyday life.

Kang Seongryong, Kang Seunghyun, Kim Minah, Kim Yoonmee, Kim Yunhyun, Sung Minjung, Yang Jiyeon, Yu Dajeong, Lee Kyungyub, Lee Jisoo, Jung Jaewoo, Jung Juryung, Jo Hyundo, Cheon Youngdon, Choi Yeonjin, Ha Jihye and Hong Jeehyun showed a high level of skill.

Choreographer Kim Sungyong focused on highlighting the individual characteristics of each of the 17 dancers. Their competitive movements were not about who could lift their legs higher than the others, but a competition for the “rarity” of connecting movements that only they could perform. The dancers would lie on the floor, suddenly jump up and disappear across the stage, folding and twisting their bodies like the joints of insects, and displaying balance with seemingly impossible poses. These movements evolved into a festival of unknown creatures. The performance culminated in a circle dance that showed the collective power of united movements.

The production team included outstanding professionals in their field: composer and music director Marihiko Hara, rehearsal director Lee Junwook, text dramaturge Kim Meyoung, set designer You Jaehun of Youjam Studio, lighting designer Lee Jungyoon, costume designer Bae Kyongsool, sound director Jung Saerom and technical director Cho Yoongeun.

The performance of the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company left a truly great impression on the audience in Astana, who were able to experience how art and nature merge together.
