Orangeburg County Chief Deputy Chandra Gibbs Barry Hutson said, “You have a child who has no life because of a serious mistake, and that is an ongoing problem around the world.”

“Our job was to provide as much immediate assistance as possible and work with our emergency services to secure the scene so they could provide immediate medical assistance and transport the woman to our local hospital.”

Meanwhile, Deputy Gibbs added, “We’re focused on making sure we’re providing that care (to the family) while also educating other families across our country to make sure they’re having those conversations at home (about gun safety). We’re also engaging in those conversations as well as education and awareness about safe gun storage.”

The incident sent shockwaves through the community. Resident Jessie Mott told WIS10, “It’s really shocking. I used to be a teacher and when I look at this, the kids aren’t in school, so it’s kind of, I don’t know, but it’s tough. I have a niece and a nephew who are 7 years old…”
