Kansas Governor Kelly says Walz is a “great asset” because he “understands rural America”

Kansas Democratic Governor Laura Kelly said Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz would be a “great asset” to Vice President Harris’ campaign because he “understands rural America.”

When asked whether Walz’s ability to appeal to rural America was overrated, Kelly said in an interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” “No, not at all.”

“Tim Walz is the epitome of a Midwestern dad. You could put him at any state fair, on any main street and certainly at any Friday night football game in rural Kansas and he would fit in perfectly,” Kelly said.

Kelly, a Democrat who governs a red state, pointed to the time when Walz represented a more conservative part of his state in Congress.

“I think we also have to remember that while Minnesota is a Democratic state, he represented a very Democratic part of Minnesota in Congress for 12 years. So he understands rural Minnesota. He understands rural America, and I think that’s one of the reasons he’s a great asset to the Harris-Walz team.”

Republicans have tried to portray Walz, like Harris, as a radical liberal.

“It’s no surprise that San Francisco liberal Kamala Harris wants West Coast wannabe Tim Walz as her running mate – Walz spent his term as governor remaking Minnesota in the image of the Golden State,” Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement after Harris’ vice presidential nomination was announced.
