Last week, X slammed the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA) and its allies with a federal lawsuit alleging they unlawfully boycotted the platform. In response, the WFA announced it would shut down its nonprofit initiative, Global Alliance for Responsible Media. The initiative was founded in 2019 to address digital safety and its priorities include improving transparency in digital ad placements. Although the WFA plans to challenge X’s allegations in court, GARM’s limited resources to fight the case led to the decision to disband it – a blow to the industry.
In retail, Amazon has made deals with TikTok and Pinterest that allow users to buy products directly from Amazon without leaving the social platforms. The goal of this move is to make social media shopping more convenient. By linking their TikTok and Pinterest profiles to their Amazon accounts, users can buy products directly from ads. The feature displays real-time prices, Prime eligibility, delivery estimates, and other details, among other things.
Apple’s newly revised compliance plan for the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) is coming under fire in antitrust law. The plan proposes the introduction of two new fees that will be imposed on developers who refuse Apple’s new DMA terms. An “Initial Acquisition Fee” is designed as a commission for connecting users to the app through the App Store and applies in the first year. The “Store Services Fee” is used to finance Apple’s App Store operations and is charged annually. Spotify accused Apple of making the proposal “intentionally confusing” and blatantly disregarding the requirements of the DMA. Epic Games also called Apple’s revisions unlawful.
