Alan Rickman was a highly regarded British stage actor, but he is best known worldwide for his two most famous roles – Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series, and the antagonist Hans Gruber in Die Hard. But the British actor missed out on participating in a production that was to become a cult production.

Although John McTiernan’s 1988 spectacle is considered one of the most successful and popular action films today, the screenplay by Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza Alan Rickman did not like (via Far Out Magazine).

The role in Die Hard was the first offer made to the actor upon his arrival in Hollywoodand he didn’t have to wait long for the offer. Due to his lack of experience in the film industry, Rickman was offered relatively little money. However, a mass-market blockbuster was not something the artist, who had worked in the theater for years, could settle for.

I didn’t know anything about LA. I didn’t know anything about the movie business. I read it and thought, “What the hell is this? I’m not making action movies.”

However, his agents explained what was offered to him – an enormous opportunity.

Agents and people said, “Alan, you don’t understand, this doesn’t happen. You’ve only been in LA for two days and you’ve already been asked to do this movie.”

Eventually the actor agreed and was instrumental in creating the film’s antagonist.. For example, he suggested that Hans Gruber should wear a suit so that he could be mistaken for a hostage in one of the scenes. Thanks to his acting skills and talent Artist created an unforgettable portrayal of the villain and one of the best roles of the 80s.
