Cal Raleigh hits two home runs and 5 runs as the Mariners complete their 3-game sweep of the Mets with a 12-1 win

SEATTLE (AP) — Cal Raleigh hit two home runs, Luis Castillo had nine strikeouts and the Seattle Mariners completed a thrilling sweep of the New York Mets with a 12-1 victory on Sunday.

Castillo allowed four hits and two walks in six innings, completing a stellar performance for Seattle’s starters. George Kirby, Logan Gilbert and Castillo combined for 21 strikeouts and 10 hits while allowing four walks in 19 innings, all with Raleigh behind the plate.

“For me, it was one of those perfect days, you know?” Castillo said through an interpreter. “The defense worked. Me and the catcher worked. So everything worked out.”

New York’s Jeff McNeil ended a scoreless 27-inning streak with a solo home run in the sixth inning, the only run for the Mets in the three-game series.

The one run allowed in the three-game series tied a team record that had been achieved twice before, and the 11-run margin was the largest of the season. Seattle has won four in a row and remains tied with the Houston Astros at the top of the AL West after a trade deadline that included the signing of Randy Arozarena and Justin Turner and bullpen reinforcements. Arozarena prevented a run with a pike catch in the outfield in Sunday’s win.

“Since we made the additions before the trade deadline, there’s just a different vibe on our team,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “Our group is a lot more confident, even on the nights we don’t come out and get the win. It’s just a different feeling where we are right now.”

Castillo (10-11) embarrassed the Mets at times, eclipsing the 1,300-career strikeout mark early on. He struck out five batters in a row midway through his outing. He got the team swinging in the fourth inning by finishing Jose Iglesias with an inning-long sinker that corkscrewed the batter into the ground and ended the inning.

“I did it a couple of times in Cincinnati,” Castillo said when asked about the dramatic strikeout. “But when it happened, a lot of teammates here told me I had my fist up, so I guess they all thought that was kind of incredible.”

Raleigh gave the Mariners a 4-0 lead with a two-run homer. in the fifth inning, then he hit a three-run shot in the sixth inning with six runs to make it 10-1. In his third multi-home run game this season, the catcher has now hit 26 total home runs, making him the first catcher since Hall of Famer Mike Piazza to hit 25 or more home runs in three consecutive seasons. Piazza did this in eight consecutive seasons (1995-2002).

Raleigh came to bat in the seventh inning with the bases loaded, but flew out to left field.

“Cal is up there chasing the ball,” Servais said. “He’s got a lot of power and when he makes a mistake and keeps it in his comfort zone, we’re happy because good things happen.”

Jorge Polanco gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the second inning. He had three hits and scored two runs.

Mets starter Luis Severino (7-6) had eight strikeouts and two walks in five innings, losing for the third straight game. He has allowed 14 earned runs in his last three starts, failing to make it past five innings each time.

“They were just superior to us in pretty much every area,” said Mets manager Carlos Mendoza. “Their pitching, their timely hits, their big hits, their great defensive plays. They played us pretty well the whole series.”

RODRIGUEZ’ RETURN

Mariners designated hitter Julio Rodríguez returned to the lineup after missing three weeks with a sprained ankle. Rodríguez was visibly impatient at bat, striking out in all five appearances.

TRAINING ROOM

Mets: 3B Mark Vientos was temporarily removed from the roster because of left ankle soreness. … RHP Dedniel Núñez (forearm) worked a bullpen session. Mendoza said the team will wait to see how he feels Monday before scheduling another session.

Mariners: SS JP Crawford threw before the game for the first time since breaking a finger on his right hand. “He still feels it, but we want to move his arm and at least get him to throw a ball,” Servais said.
