When they arrived, they noticed a large number of people in the area and immediately began searching for victims.

A short time later, a 13-year-old girl was taken to a local hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds. She succumbed to her injuries during surgery.

The investigation is currently ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Harrisburg Police at 717-558-6900.

Steelton Highspire School District Superintendent Dr. Mick Iskric Jr. issued the following statement to the community:

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the loss of one of our students this morning. This loss will certainly bring up many emotions and questions for our entire school community, especially our students. Tomorrow, Monday, August 12, 2024, counselors will be available in the Junior/Sr High School from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. They will be here to support any student, staff, or community member who needs or desires assistance related to this loss. We also want to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of this student.

Steelton Mayor Ciera Dent also issued the following statement:

Honestly, I’m angry. There are absolutely no words that can justify the fact that our community is once again mourning the loss of one of our own to gun violence. THIRTEEN YEARS OLD. Let that sink in. Naryah would have started 8th grade in two weeks. And instead of buying school supplies and clothes, her family is buying a casket and paying for a funeral. My heart breaks for our youth. The level of trauma they are enduring is unimaginable. We need thoughts and prayers, but we also need justice, policies, and those guns off the streets! We need action!

A memorial service for Naryah is planned for Sunday at 5 p.m. on the Steelton High football field.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to cover Naryah’s funeral expenses.
