“Goofy” – rescued dog has spent almost half his life waiting for a home

A “crazy” dog who has waited nearly half his life for a permanent home is still hoping someone will adopt him.

Rescue dog Keanu was adopted at the age of five months after being rescued from the streets of Romania by the People’s Animal Welfare Society (Paw Society).

But 18 months later, he was looking for a home again when his family had a new baby.

Paw Society is now desperately looking for a suitable home for Keanu before he celebrates his one year anniversary in the Burgess Hill foster home. He is currently Paw Society’s longest-retained dog.

Megan Baker, spokeswoman for the Paw Society, said: “It is heartbreaking that such a sweet dog as Keanu is struggling to find a home.

“Keanu arrived at his foster home a broken shadow of a dog who was extremely fearful. He has made great progress during his time in foster care and, although still sensitive, has become very playful and affectionate (on his terms).

“He loves running around in a fenced-off field – he often goes crazy with excitement.”

According to Paw Society, Keanu is having difficulty finding a home because he has a “history of biting,” which “immediately worsens his prospects.”

“When he was not even a year old, Keanu delivered a warning bite to someone he was afraid of,” Ms Baker said.

“His body language was ignored and no one stood up for him. He felt he had no other choice.”

“Unfortunately, this puts many adopters off. However, with the right attitude and respect, he has not bitten since then. Given his history, he is looking for a home with experienced people who are willing to accept advice.”

Despite his sad past, Keanu is described by his foster mother as a “beautiful boy with a crazy personality.”

He “adores” the two big dogs in his foster family and could live with another confident and playful dog.

“The progress Keanu has made since his return is incredible and is thanks to the patience, understanding and trust his foster mum has shown him,” the charity said.

“His new family needs to be willing to learn with him and needs to meet him a few times to build trust.”

Keanu is available for adoption anywhere in the UK.
