Record-breaking ‘tallest and longest’ ‘Wing’ roller coaster coming to Virginia in 2025

In 2025, Kings Dominion amusement park in Doswell, Virginia, will open Rapterra – an epic, crazy roller coaster ride.

The coaster will be 3,086 feet long and 145 feet tall, and promises an “intense launch” at 65 miles per hour (mph), “wide turns,” corkscrews, and “three stomach-churning inversions.” Kings Dominion proudly touts the upcoming ride as “the world’s tallest and longest launched wing coaster.”

What is a launched wing roller coaster?

Riders can reportedly expect 89 seconds of pure thrills, with the invigorating 0-65 mph ride taking off in just four short seconds. The roller coaster’s wing design will place riders on either side. Rapterra will have no floor, giving those brave enough to venture onto it the feeling of flying freely through the air.

“Feel the rush of adrenaline under your wings and the earth beneath your feet,” says a promotional video. “Rapterra is taking to the skies. Launching in 2025.”

What else is there to know about Rapterra from Kings Dominion?

The ride’s backstory tells how archaeologists discovered the remains of a “Jungle Hawk Shrine” once buried beneath the volcanic rock of Mount Inferna. Kings Dominion says Rapterra is inspired by the “wild spirit” of the “mighty” Jungle Hawk, who is unleashed on the ride.

The roller coaster will open as part of Kings Dominion’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Construction is already underway and the theme park is documenting the process on its Instagram account.

“We are excited to unveil Rapterra, the must-see attraction of 2025, at Kings Dominion,” said park Vice President and General Manager Bridgette Bywater. “This extraordinary addition promises new thrills for our guests, is the perfect centerpiece of our 50th anniversary celebration, and reinforces why Kings Dominion is the ultimate destination for unforgettable memories and thrilling excitement.”

The amusement park has yet to announce the official launch date of Rapterra rides in 2025. Until then, you can check out a hyper-realistic simulation of the roller coaster below.
