I never tried to distance myself from Draco Malfoy

Tom Felton has said he is “more than happy” to become known for his portrayal of the character Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter film series.

The actor is best known for his portrayal of the blonde antihero and archenemy of Harry Potter at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Felton, 31, said he remained proud of his accomplishments and questioned why he wanted to distance himself from them.

He said: “I don’t know where this fascination comes from. I don’t know where this idea comes from that you want to do things differently because you’re known for something.

“From what I understand, people quite like Draco, I did a pretty good job as Draco, so why would I naturally want to stray from that? That doesn’t make sense.”

Felton starred alongside lead actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the film series based on the novels by JK Rowling from 2001 to 2011.

He said it was no problem for him to be recognized primarily for the role, even seven years after the release of the final film in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

He said: “I think it’s cool. I’m so proud of it. I had a good metaphor for it the other day. It’s like Harrison Ford is always portrayed as Star Wars or Indiana Jones, and look at his body of work, how much did he do? But he’s always going to be portrayed that way.”

“I will expect for the rest of my life that a precursor to Harry Potter, Draco, will be named after me, and I am more than happy with that.

“Draco is not a villain, he’s not actually a bad person. He’s just a little asshole.”

“A lot of these characters are aggressive and antagonistic, they have those qualities… I revel in playing people who are slightly antagonistic and slightly flawed.”

Felton plays Logan in the YouTube Premium drama Origin, which premieres on the site on November 14.
