A&E’s new series “Houses of Horror” reveals the dark side of Greek college life

A&E’s new series “Houses of Horror” reveals the dark side of Greek college life

When Daniel Santulli arrived at the University of Missouri as a freshman in the fall of 2021, he joined a popular fraternity: Phi Gamma Delta.

As a newcomer hoping to become a member of the well-known fraternity, the 19-year-old was ordered to regularly procure food for the brothers, thoroughly clean the members’ rooms and cater to their numerous whims.

He was treated even more harshly, deprived of sleep, kept away from his family, and humiliated.

Life as he knew it ended on October 19, 2021, when he was forced to drink a bottle of vodka taped to his hand at a fraternity Pledge Father Reveal party. He was left blind, paralyzed, and unable to communicate after suffering brain damage as a result of severe alcohol poisoning.

Santulli’s ordeal is the subject of A&E’s new series, Houses of Horror: Secrets of Greek College Life(An exclusive clip is shown below.)

The series premieres Monday, August 12 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT with two back-to-back episodes and explores the dark side of Greek life on campus.

“Each hour-long episode features firsthand accounts of how the power, control and secrecy of fraternities can create cult-like dynamics that lead to an environment where nefarious activities – from drug use to sexual assault – can thrive,” A&E said in a press release.

The series includes exclusive interviews with former fraternity members, family members, police officers and experts and explains in detail how Greek organizations “can have far-reaching consequences that can become dangerous and even deadly,” the press release said.

The first episode, “Bingeing to Belong,” details Santulli’s unfortunate journey to becoming a fraternity brother.

In the episode, his older sister Meredith says she noticed her brother’s strange behavior. “I noticed that Danny wasn’t going to class,” she says.

“He started telling me he had no money,” even though he had only been at college for a month, she adds.

Fraternity brothers can draft new members at any time of the day or night, says an unidentified former fraternity member in a trailer for the first episode.

“You’re almost supposed to feel like a piece of dirt, in the sense that you’re their servant,” he says. “You’re not human. You’re a novice – like you have to do something until you’re actually initiated.”

This may include the forced consumption of large amounts of alcohol.

After being forced to drink alcohol and then beer at the fraternity that night, Danny collapsed.

“He was thrown onto a couch and abandoned,” the emergency room press release states.

“Instead of calling an ambulance, the Fiji brothers tried to cover their tracks – by driving him to the hospital under cover of darkness.

“The Santulli family would later learn devastating truths about that fateful night when security camera footage emerged capturing some of the gruesome abuse, but their fight for Danny had only just begun.”
