Duval County Election Office warns of fake voting guides and urges voters to do their own research on candidates

DUVAL COUNTY, Florida. – The Duval County elections official urged residents to educate themselves on the candidates because fake voting manuals are circulating.

Shortly before early voting began in St. Johns County, fake voting guides were sent to voters.

Jerry Holland said the fake campaign guides are a problem his office is facing in this election.

“Now people are taking the exact same information and putting their own decisions on it,” Holland said. “And you don’t really know if it came from the source that’s listed above?”

Holland said it was difficult to distinguish the real ones from the fake ones.

“It’s very difficult because they use the exact form,” Holland said. “They just change the information there. I think you have to kind of question the person who gives you the form. Can you give me your name and your phone number, because you have to find out if that’s the real information and who found a way out.”

Guides like former Congresswoman Corrine Brown’s “Quick Picks” were copied.

“Most of the time, these things are distributed at the polling places and do not come from the election official,” Holland said. “And they also campaign outside of the area they are allowed to do, which is 150 feet from the polling place entrance.”

He added that while they may be campaigning legally, they may be disclosing information that does not actually match the information provided by the sponsor.

He said that once people had cast their vote, they would not get another chance until the next election and urged them to educate themselves about each candidate.

Brown will hold a press conference to discuss the legal action she has taken over the duplication of her Quick Picks voter guide.
