Jo Potter praised Gers’ ruthlessness

JO POTTER praised the ruthlessness of her Rangers side as they secured an impressive 11-0 win over Aberdeen on the opening day of the SWPL season.

The Light Blues dominated throughout and went into halftime with a six-goal lead before adding another five goals, making for a fantastic performance in front of goal overall.

Speaking to RangersTV after the win over the Dons, the head coach was pleased with the frequency with which her team scored goals and how they pushed for more throughout.

She commented: “I said it with five minutes to go. I don’t want us to take our foot off the gas at any point.

“When other teams score a lot of goals, we have to make sure we try to do the same.

“The three points are very important, but I thought 11 goals would have been just as important today.

“I am really proud of the group and the different goals we were able to score today.

“You can see the difference in the goalscorers and the confidence some of the players had today. So there were a lot of positives to take away.

“How happy am I? Yes, very much, we asked the group to be ruthless.

“I thought our defensive performance was outstanding today.

“You can look a little bit beyond when we score 11 goals, and I’m talking about our defensive work, but it’s about the little things and details that I asked us to work on in pre-season.

“That’s something that really came to the fore today and allowed us to spend most of the game in the opposition half and create chance after chance.

“I’m very happy about the three points and eleven goals are really important for us.”

The former Lioness praised the performance of debutant Katie Wilkinson, who scored four goals in her first start for the club, while also praising several players on the team for their performances.

She continued, “That’s what we asked her to do when she came in, so I walked her through the door.

“We know she is a goalscorer, we know she is a threat, but she can score all kinds of goals.

“It’s a real challenge, that’s four goals in 75 minutes today.

“I’m sure there’s more to come from her, but I think you can also see that the players around her will just benefit from it.

“I thought Rio (Hardy) looked lively today as well, Lizzie (Arnot), Mia (McAulay), they can all bring different parts of their game and Wilko coming on can help get that out of them as well.

“Because she is simply a different type of player than any we have ever had.

“I’m looking forward to it. There were a lot of good performances today. I don’t think I can single out one, but Wilko’s four goals are very good.”

Next Sunday the Gers have their first home game of the season when they face Partick Thistle and Potter will want to give his full attention to that before a busy run of games follows.

She added: “It’s a big month. We have to make sure we stick to the old cliche of taking one game at a time, but it is what it is.”

“We have to make sure we get through these games properly. We’re doing our job like we always do, but it’s a big month.

“There are a lot of games coming up and we will need every single player in our squad. So far they have been brilliant.”
