Disney Mickey Epic: Re-Brushed brings back one of the most interesting Disney games, and since it is now available on many more platforms than the first time, more people could be playing it than ever before. Originally released in 2010 exclusively for Nintendo Wii, Epic Mickey took Disney’s iconic mascot in a different direction than the typically cheery variety. Traveling through a destroyed version of the Disney Parks known as Wasteland, Mickey can try to restore his surroundings and help the Wasteland’s inhabitants, or take a more destructive path.

Almost 14 years later Epic Mickey: Rebrushed gives the experience a new lookThe game has apparently been re-released faithfully with a few tweaks. While the original title was developed by Junction Point Studios, a subsidiary of Disney Interactive Studios under the direction of Deus Ex Creator Warren Spector, Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is acquired by Purple Lamp. As a subsidiary of THQ Nordic and Embracer Group, Purple Lamp has previously released a remake of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom and the original sequence, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake.

The price for the standard version of Disney Mickey Epic: Re-Brushed is $59.99thankfully it avoids the $69.99 maximum that some AAA games have, but it still feels a bit too ambitious. The original Epic Mickey for $49.99, and Purple Lamp’s SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated for only $29.99. $59.99 is a lot of money for a remake, even when you associate it with a brand as strong as Disney.

Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed – Gameplay Details

More than just a 3D platform game

Epic Mickey. Newly brushed Mickey throws paint on the floor.

At its core the gameplay of Epic Mickey: Rebrushed focuses on 3D platformwhich guides Mickey through various themed environments structured like the different lands of a theme park. Mickey’s tool of choice is a paintbrush, which can be equipped with either paint or thinner to determine how he interacts with his environment. Paint can be used to revert enemies back to their former forms and restore eroded aspects of the world such as missing platforms, while thinner erases everything in its path. There is something of a third-person shooter aspect to it, therefore, but Mickey can also attack with a melee spin move.

Epic Mickey: Rebrushed doubles the platforming possibilities by adding some new abilities into the mixThe ability to move faster by sprinting and diving should make it easier to nimbly navigate the world, and a ground strike could make aerial combat options more relevant than before.

3D platform is not everything Epic Mickey: Rebrushed has, however, to offer. The game brings variety with a small dose of RPG elementswith side missions and a basic morality system to show the impact of the decision between restoring or destroying the wasteland. Interspersed are some 2D platforming segments based on classic Mickey Mouse cartoons, such as Steamboat Willie And Lonely ghosts.

The story of Disney Mickey Epic: Re-Brushed is basically a playground for classic Disney characters and concepts that have been largely forgotten in the modern era. The setup is based on the “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” segment of fantasyin which Mickey meddles in the affairs of the wizard Yen Sid, who is wreaking havoc in the wasteland. When he is eventually drawn into this world by a magic mirror, Mickey must contend with the threat of the Blot, a destructive force inspired by the Phantom Blot from the serialized stories in Mickey’s newspaper strips.

Disney Illusion Island Review: Mickeyvania

Illusion Island is a light-hearted adventure that combines Metroidvania gameplay with classic Disney characters to create entertaining, family-friendly fun.

Other Disney characters appear, sometimes in animatronic versions, but the big supporting star is Oswald, the lucky rabbitAs Disney’s original cartoon icon before Mickey Mouse, the game marks their first appearance together after Disney lost the rights to Oswald for nearly 80 years before reacquiring them to Epic Mickey. The dynamic between the two characters is an important part of the narrative, as is Mickey’s decision whether to defeat the Blot with a mercenary approach or take the path of restoration.

Although the original Epic Mickey was criticized a bit for the camera controls, bugs and a superficial approach to decision making, but it should be simple enough for Epic Mickey: Rebrushed to at least fix the first two complaints. Behind these complaints lies a fascinating and surprisingly challenging game that is worth playing both as a family game and as a really interesting option for adult players. The original game never got the recognition it deserved, but even if Disney Mickey Epic: Re-Brushed follows the same path, there is a lot to love about this unique experience.
