Devin White: I took less money for a better situation with the Eagles

Eagles linebacker Devin White began his career with four good years in Tampa Bay, but things went downhill last season, his fifth year. Now he thinks he’s in better shape.

White said on Pivot Podcast that while the one-year, $4 million contract he signed with the Eagles wasn’t the best offer he received as a free agent, it was with the team he believes is best suited to help him get his career back on track.

I took lessbecause I felt it was a better situation,” White said about the Tampa Bay Times“That shows that it’s not about the money. It was never about the money. It’s about being in the right situation, in the right environment. And being able to have fun.”

White, 26, said he spent last season trying to play despite a painful foot injury, and when he got to the point where he just couldn’t do it anymore, someone within the organization – whose name he did not disclose – pressured him to keep playing despite his injury.

“That’s when things really went downhill,” White said. “It started going downhill when I asked for the trade. … At first everyone liked me, but when I asked for the trade and tried to do what was best for me, it turned everyone against me. Not everyone, but some people in higher positions.”

White said he has a great relationship with Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles and doesn’t blame Bowles for everything that went wrong. But there were clearly others within the franchise that White didn’t appreciate. And now White believes he’s with an organization that has his own interests in mind.
