More than 200 turkeys killed after teens drove ATVs into Sumter County chicken coop

SUMTER, SC (WIS) – Officials say three teenagers admitted to driving ATVs on a man’s property in Sumter County, damaging his crops and causing the deaths of over 200 turkeys.

Officials said they were called to a home in eastern Sumter County on Monday to respond to a report of a civil dispute.

According to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, the landowner told a deputy he asked the teens to leave the property before noticing that the doors to a turkey house were open and ATV and motorcycle tracks were visible inside.

According to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, the landowner told officers that the turkeys were trampling each other out of fear.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, officers also found crops that were believed to have been damaged by the teens.

After the three teens were detained and read their Miranda rights, the teens admitted to driving the vehicles on the property and inside the turkey house, according to the sheriff’s office.

According to the sheriff’s office, the case has been forwarded to family court.
