Polish Day Parade to be held in Warren on August 24 – Macomb Daily

The annual Polish Day Parade will wind through the streets of Warren on August 24, marking the third consecutive year in Warren since moving from Hamtramck.

This year’s theme is “Women of Poland” and the float featuring scientist Madame Marie Curie will reflect this theme.

“There is such a rich history of women of Polish descent,” said Judge John Chmura, chairman of the parade.

The poet Wislawa Szymborska, the revolutionary Emilia Plater and the cosmetics entrepreneur Helena (Chaja) Rubinstein are among the Polish women who left their mark.

Also participating in the parade are the Cousino High School Marching Band, Hooper, the Detroit Pistons mascot, the Redford Township Unicycle Club, the Memorial Drum Corps and the Detroit Station of the U.S. Border Patrol.

“We will also have some military vehicles and many Polish groups at the parade,” said Chmura.

The Polish Century Club of Detroit, the American Polish Century Club of Sterling Heights, the Polish Cultural Center in Troy, the Polish American Congress and the Zakopane Dancers will all be part of the parade.

“Zakopane is a region in the south of Poland and the group performs local dances from this area,” said Chmura.

Radio WLLZ (106.7 FM) will be on site with radio hosts Doug Podell and Chmura announcing the parade as it passes by Warren City Hall.

The Polish Day Parade begins at 4:10 p.m. at Cousino High School, heads south on Hoover Road, then turns onto Common Road and ends at City Hall on Van Dyke Avenue.
