Our countdown to the New Orleans Saints regular season continues with Day 31, making the current owner of the number 31 jersey our Saints Player of the Day. That’s second-year safety Jordan Howden, who will need to make a big leap forward in 2024.

Howden is very promising. He has all the athletic ability in the world, a proven playmaking ability in college at Minnesota (he defended 20 passes and had four interceptions for the Golden Gophers) and a strong sense of responsibility – he was voted team captain for a reason.
We just need to see him put it all together in the pros. He was benched late last year in favor of Johnathan Abram, and the veteran has been pushing him for the starting spot all summer. Howden has also been slowed by a shoulder injury. He needs to stay on the field, learn from his mistakes, and earn the trust of his coaches. He’s done that before in a good college program. He just needs to do it again.
It would be great to see him stick it out with the Black and Gold until the end. If Howden can live up to expectations and prove himself to be a reliable starter, the Saints would have another important building block in their youth development. In order to win games and play football successfully again, young players have to develop and take on a lot of responsibility. It is up to Howden to prove that he can be that guy for them.
