Bengals Film Room: Josh Newton has the juice

Bengals Film Room: Josh Newton has the juice

The Cincinnati Bengals continue to fill their secondary with young talent with tremendous potential. Former TCU cornerback Josh Newton has excellent man coverage skills, is quick, and can make tackles in the open field.

Let’s take a look at what the Bengals got with their fifth-round pick.

Newton is below and wears number 24 in white.

In this clip, Newton rotates his hips outside to shield the receiver. When the receiver cuts inside and under Newton, the Horned Frogs could have been in trouble, but Newton quickly rotates his hips and brings his outside arm around to hit the receiver.

From this point on, Newton’s coverage is tighter than Shannon Sharpe’s cardigan and he bats the ball away.

The bigger receiver tries to out-gain Newton in this clip, but it’s futile.

Newton maintains a position up and outside the route. When the ball comes, Newton secures the tackle with his near hand while reaching forward with his other hand to bat the ball away.

Newton is number 24 in white at the top of the screen.

Newton doesn’t pursue this route, but instead takes an angle to cut it off. His good position on the fade route allows him to lean on the receiver, pushing him closer to the sideline and giving the quarterback a much tighter window of opportunity.

This is a fantastic achievement on this route.

Newton is a physical and sure tackler in the open field, as this clip shows. Even when the ball carrier tries to make a late cut, Newton stays with him and takes him to the ground.

The Bengals have spent a lot of draft capital on the cornerback position over the past two years, but Josh Newton has the skill set to move some of those highly drafted players down the rankings.
