Utility work disrupts traffic in Old Town Goleta | Local News

Residents of Hollister Avenue should expect increased traffic as utility work on the street will begin soon and last until the end of August.

According to the City of Goleta, utility work is being done on underground cables in preparation for the Hollister Avenue Bridge replacement project.

During this time, traffic control will be on site to guide drivers and ensure the safety of the construction site for workers.

Authorities warn drivers that “significant delays” are to be expected and recommend using alternative routes if possible.

Construction is expected to last until the end of August, but could be extended depending on delays or weather.

City officials said construction crews would work around the clock, including weekends, to complete the project.

The new construction comes just weeks after the road was redesignated to Hollister, where the previously four-lane road was reduced to two lanes, one in each direction.

Other changes include new bike lanes and angled parking spaces that force drivers to park backwards. The city said the move created additional parking in an area where it was needed. However, the changes have caused mixed feelings among residents of the old town.

Some residents say the new road is more confusing and causes traffic congestion.

Further construction work on the Goleta Bridge

Caltrans is drilling on Highway 101 as part of the San Jose Creek bridge replacement project in Goleta.

Drilling will take place Monday through Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The project is scheduled for completion in early September.

Travelers traveling along this route will be diverted via the northbound lane of the highway, where the northern portion of the bridge has already been completed.

During this phase of the project, two lanes will be open on each side of Highway 101. Construction on this project is expected to be completed in June 2026.

Closer to Goleta Beach County Park, Caltrans is replacing the bridge on Highway 217 over San Jose Creek.

The eastbound Highway 217 on-ramp at Sandspit Road will remain closed until the project is completed, which is scheduled for summer 2025.

Travelers leaving Santa Barbara Airport can access Highway 101 via Fairview Avenue and Hollister Avenue, Caltrans said.
