Arizona Cardinals vs. New Orleans Saints – Live Updates, Results, TV

The Arizona Cardinals hosted the New Orleans Saints at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on Saturday in Week 1 of the NFL preseason. Check out our updates from the game.

Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler led the Saints to a 16-14 win over the Arizona Cardinals with a successful two-minute drill on Saturday in Glendale.

Arizona took a 14-13 lead with 1:55 left.

Rattler, a Phoenix native, then led the Saints on a 56-yard drive that ended with a 37-yard field goal by Charlie Smyth.

In the battle for the Cardinals’ backup QB spot, Clayton Tune seemed to have the edge. He played the second half and completed 15 of 23 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown. Desmond Ridder played the first half and completed 4 of 9 passes for 43 yards.

Rattler, the third Saints QB to enter the game, played against the Cardinals’ third-string defense. He completed 9 of 17 passes for 70 yards. He is competing with Jake Haener (9 of 13, 107 yards) for the role of backup to Derek Carr (2 of 6, 12 yards).

Michael Carter was the Cardinals’ leading rusher with 41 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Dan Chisena was Arizona’s leading receiver with five catches for 63 yards.

The Cardinals were penalized seven times for 84 yards.

Clayton Tune’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Tony Jones Jr. was acknowledged after review and the Cardinals took a 14-13 lead over the Saints with 1:55 left.

Tune entered the game in the second half and completed a respectable 15 of 23 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked twice.

The touchdown was the third catch of the day for Jones Jr., who gained 24 yards in total and added 11 more on five attempts.

Result: Cardinals 14, Saints 13 (1:55, Q4)

The Arizona Cardinals face a third-and-15 early in the third quarter after quarterback Clayton Tune suffered an 8-yard loss late in the second quarter.

Tune was sacked twice and totaled 17 yards. He completed 5 of 6 passes for 67 yards.

Arizona has thrown the ball just 15 times. Desmond Ridder, who played in the first half, completed 4 of 9 passes for 43 yards. The two are competing for backup starter Kyler Murray.

Murray is not expected to play in any of his team’s three preseason games.

Result: Saints 13, Cardinals 7 (end of Q3)

Spencer Rattler, a native of Phoenix, started as quarterback on the Saints’ first offensive series of the second half.

Rattler led the Saints to a touchdown – and crowned it with a 4-yard run that was initially ruled too short, but was converted into a touchdown after a tackle and a review.

Rattler was 1-for-1 for 15 yards on the drive.

His next series was not as successful, as he managed 1 of 3 for 6 yards.

Rattler was selected by the Saints in the fifth round in 2024. He attended Oklahoma (2019-2021) and South Carolina (2022-23) after starring at Pinnacle High School. Rattler was featured in the Netflix sports documentary QB1: Beyond the Lights.

Result: Saints 13, Cardinals 7 (6:44, Q3)

Michael Carter scored the Cardinals’ first touchdown of the season in a preseason game against the Saints.

Carter carried the ball 11 yards and scored. Matt Prater’s point put the Cardinals up 7-6.

Clayton Tune replaced Desmond Ridder at quarterback at the start of the half.

Tune completed 4 of 5 passes for 54 yards in his only series. Ridder completed 4 of 9 passes for 43 yards in the entire first half.

Carter now has six carries for 32 yards.

A deep throw from Desmond Ridder on fourth and two was incomplete, allowing the Saints to go into the second half with a lead.

Ridder, who was the Cardinals’ quarterback in the first half, completed 4 of 9 passes for 43 yards. He was sacked once and completed five carries for 39 yards.

Andy Baccellia’s incomplete pass ended a 10-play, 57-yard possession. The Cardinals lost the ball with 29 seconds left in the half.

In those 29 seconds, the Saints covered 73 yards – mostly on a 58-yard pass to AT Perry – and kicked a field goal to double their lead.

Jake Haener came into the game as quarterback for the Saints after the first two offensive series. He completed 9 of 13 passes for 107 yards.

Result: Saints 6, Cardinals 0 (halftime)

Blake Grupe’s 26-yard field goal makes the difference between the Cardinals and the Saints.

The kick came at the end of a 10-play, 40-yard drive by New Orleans, with the majority of the yards coming from two completions by AT Perry.

Result: Saints 3, Cardinals 0 (2:58, Q2)

In the first preseason game between both teams, the Cardinals and Saints combined for only 71 yards of offense.

The Saints had the edge with 44 to 27 yards, but the game remained scoreless.

As expected, Cardinals QB Kyler Murray did not play in the game. In his place, Desmond Ridder went 1-for-2 for 3 yards. He was sacked once and carried the ball once for 5 yards.

Trey Benson was the Cardinals’ main running back, rushing for 16 yards on four runs.

Result: Cardinals 0, Saints 0 (end of Q1)

New Orleans Saints starting quarterback Derek Carr played two series before making way for Jake Haener.

Carr was 2 of 6 for 12 yards.

Haener is a second-year pro who was drafted in the fourth round by the Saints in 2023. Before being selected, he played at Washington (2017-18) and Fresno State (2019-2022).

Saints QB Derek Carr was 1-for-4, with his only completion going for 10 yards against the Cardinals.

The Cardinals defense nearly intercepted a ball at the line. Carr dropped a pass, but the Cardinals defended well and forced the other incomplete passes.

In the first live appearance of the Cardinals’ new kickoff team, Matt Prater’s 67-yard kick was returned 29 yards from the end zone.

Arizona’s offense didn’t even look that great in its debut. Desmond Ridder was sacked for a loss of 6 yards and the Cardinals were eliminated by three points.

Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon said earlier this week that quarterback Kyler Murray will not play in any of the team’s three preseason games.

But that hasn’t kept QB1 off the field. Murray took the field to warm up on Saturday and ran through several passing drills before making way for Clayton Tune and Desmond Ridder, who are battling for the second spot.

Murray was also in the middle of the group of players before the team left the field after warming up.
