The “shocking” coming out story of BBC star Miriam Margolyes, TV premiere and dispute among Harry Potter fans

Miriam Margolyes has been around for a long time, but she still has the power to shock. In a new traveling show, everyone’s favorite foul-mouthed artist takes over Oz.

In “Miriam Margolyes: A New Australian Adventure,” the actress – who is a British-Australian mother – takes the trip of a lifetime to the Antipodean island. For Miriam, Australia has always been a land of opportunity and hope; something she needs in her life, now more than ever.

At 82, she has just undergone major medical surgery and to give herself a kickstart, she decided to return to Australia in search of new opportunities.

Miriam Margolyes OBE is an actress with a long career on stage and screen. Miriam was born in Oxford and grew up in a traditional Jewish family.

At 82, she describes herself as a secular Jew who is politically anti-Zionist. In 1993, she won a BAFTA for Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence.

However, she became known worldwide for her role as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films. Today, she is also known for her strong opinions and shocking language in television and radio appearances.

She represented Newnham College in the first series of University Challenge in 1963. She was reportedly possibly one of the first people to say “f***” on British television.

Miriam has been in a steady relationship with the Australian historian Heather Sutherland since 1968. She suffers from spinal stenosis – a narrowing of the spinal canal – and recently underwent surgery.

She told Closer magazine: “I can’t walk very well and I’m registered as disabled. I use all sorts of aids. I’ve got two sticks and a walker and they’re so boring, but I just have a mobility scooter, which is a lot of fun.”

Regarding her coming out to her mother, Miriam said: “I deeply regret telling my mother that I was having a sexual relationship with a woman. That was indulgent of me.”

“That was partly because I told her everything. We always confided in each other. I hadn’t hidden anything from her.

“And when it happened to me that I was punctured, penetrated, deflowered… I don’t know what you would call it… I was thoroughly fucked by a woman and it was just fabulous.

“When you have good sex for the first time, you honestly think, ‘Yay, I might do that again.’ I shared it with her and it disgusted and shocked her and her horizons were darkened from that moment on.”

Earlier this year, she angered adult Harry Potter fans by saying: “I worry about the Harry Potter fans because they should have gotten over this by now. It was 25 years ago and it’s for children.”

Fans responded on X (formerly Twitter), with one saying: “No one has the right to shame people into taking away their enjoyment of something they harmlessly enjoy.”

Miriam Margolyes: A New Australian Adventure airs Friday at 9pm on BBC Two and iPlayer.
