#USC2Paris Olympics recap (Day 16): Three gold, one silver and two bronze medals for the Trojans today in athletics, women’s water polo and soccer

PARIS, FRANCE — USC had its most medal-laden day in Paris as the Trojans won six Olympic medals today. First to step onto the podium of the day were the women’s water polo stars

with USC graduate Espar winning the first gold medal for Spain. Kearns, currently a Trojan, now has her first Olympic medal with silver. A few hours later

held gold as a member of the USA women’s soccer team that defeated Brazil. The Trojans would continue to shine in the final running events of these 2024 Games.

Water polo for women
Gold medal match: Spain

• Participating in her fourth Olympic Games, two-time silver medalist Anni Espar scored two goals and added a steal and a field block for Spain in its gold medal victory over Australia. It is Espar’s first GOLD medal after winning silver in 2012 and 2020 and also the first gold for Spain.
• The current Trojan is taking part in her second Olympic Games Tilly Kearns had a snapshot and caused numerous exclusions for her Australian team, won her first Olympic medal with a SILVER in today’s defeat against Spain.
Bronze medal match: Netherlands 11, USA 10

• Freshman and first-time Olympic participant Emily Ausmus scored the fifth goal for the U.S. team in the bronze medal game, which the Netherlands won with a last-second shot.
• She is taking part in the Olympic Games for the third time and Kaleigh Gilchrist scored the seventh goal for the US team and contributed a steal, a rebound and a field block in today’s bronze medal loss to the Netherlands.
• Two-time NCAA champion and Olympian Amanda Longan did not play for Team USA in today’s bronze medal game.
Match for 7th place: Greece 19, Canada 10

• First-time Olympian and NCAA champion Verica Bakoc scored a goal to secure another coup in Canada’s defeat of Greece, ending Canada’s run in Paris with an eighth-place finish at the Games.
• Two-time Olympian and NCAA champion Hayley McKelvey scored two goals and secured a steal in Canada’s final game in Paris.






Men’s Athletics
4×400 Season Finale

• Two-time Olympian Ray Benjamin (USA) ran the final stretch for Team USA and contributed to the victory GOLD in a time of 2:54.43. It is Benjamin’s second Olympic gold with the USA in this discipline, in addition to the gold won yesterday in the 400-meter hurdles and silver this year in 2020.




Women’s athletics
4×400 Season Finale

• Two-time Olympian, Nicole Yeargin (Great Britain) ran the third leg of the Great Britain relay and helped her country to victory BRONZE with a time of 3:18.92. It is Yeargin’s second bronze medal in Paris, along with Great Britain’s 4×400 mixed relay team.
• Participating in the Olympic Games for the first time, John (Great Britain) did not run for Great Britain in today’s final, but won her first Olympic medal with a BRONZE after helping her country qualify for the final by participating in the preliminary rounds.
• Two-time Olympian, Kyra Konstantin (Canada) ran the third leg for Canada in today’s final race and finished sixth overall with a time of 3:22.01.




Women’s football
Gold medal match: USA 1, Brazil 0

• Former Trojan and Olympic newcomer Cross Bethune earned GOLD as a replacement for Team USA after today’s gold medal victory over Brazil.


 

Next:

Tomorrow (Sunday, August 11) the Olympic competition will conclude and the Trojans have one last medal in the pool within reach. Men’s water polo is the last action in which USC athletes will compete on the final day of these Olympic Games in Paris. Team USA Hannes Daube And Marko Vavic will look to win their first medals when the USA face Hungary in the bronze medal match. Five other Trojans will play in placement games. Australia will play with Trojans for seventh place Blake Edwards, Lachlan Edwards, Jacob Mercep And Nick Porter for the Sharks against Italy. In the match for fifth place, the Olympic veteran and three-time NCAA champion Kostas Genidounias will compete for Greece against Spain. USC is also looking forward to the start of the Paralympic Games in Paris (August 28 to September 8), where the new Trojan athletics star will compete Ezra Cheeky competes for Team USA and is a USC graduate Cindy Ouellet back for more games for Canada in women’s wheelchair basketball.
