First weather warning day: Heavy thunderstorms until Tuesday

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – Today is another First Alert Weather Day for the Western Slope as there is a risk of heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding. This threat will continue through Tuesday before it driers out on Wednesday.

Time of rain

Scattered showers and thunderstorms developed this afternoon, with most of the thunderstorms occurring in the higher elevations. Thunderstorms in Utah will continue to move westward tonight, bringing possible heavy rain. There will be some lingering showers or thunderstorms overnight, and a brief shower or thunderstorm could develop Sunday morning as well. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop again in the afternoon, becoming more widespread in the evening. This will be the pattern through Tuesday.

Rainfall and flash flood risk

The amount of rain we could expect between now and Sunday night is about 0.25″ of rain in the valley and 0.50-0.75″ of rain in the higher elevations. These amounts could of course be higher in some places. The Weather Forecast Center has given us an increased risk of flash flooding for the rest of the evening and into Tuesday as these thunderstorms with heavy rain can cause flash flooding. So be careful on the roads over the next few days if you are driving into a thunderstorm with heavy rain. Be sure to slow down and if you come across a flooded road, turn around and find an alternate route instead. Do not drive through a flooded road.

Temperatures tomorrow and this week

Temperatures tonight will drop to above 25 degrees by 8 p.m. and below 25 degrees by 10 p.m. Lows are expected tomorrow morning to be around 19 degrees in Grand Junction, 14 degrees in Montrose, 16 degrees in Delta and 14 degrees in Cortez. Highs will be around 32 degrees in Grand Junction, 28 degrees in Montrose, 29 degrees in Delta and 30 degrees in Cortez. Highs will continue to drop this week to around 27 degrees in Grand Junction before rising again to around 32 degrees by the end of the week.
