The Wii game I always wanted was never made by Nintendo, but luckily all these years later a fan developed it and it looks exactly how I dreamed it would.
It’s been nearly 17 years since Wii Fit came out and we first got to know the paradise that is Wuhu Island. It wasn’t until Wii Sports Resort that it got its name and became the idyllic place we all know and love, and back then, as a younger gamer, I was really fascinated. I literally spent hours exploring the whole place in the game Island Flyover – flying around the buildings, over the river, and of course, right down into the volcano. Heck, I even wrote my own stories about the Miis who live there and their lives on the island. But in all that time, I’ve only Really I wanted to be able to explore the island freely on foot and see all the sights, represented by my Mii.
Well, thanks to the new fan game Wuhu Island Exploration Tourwe can now do just that. It was created by Itch.io user AtomicLugia, who is clearly holding onto the same dream as me, as he’s done his best to mix the location from Wii Sports Resort with the improvements from Wii Fit Plus. There are also some new additions, such as underwater areas. After choosing one of eight playable Miis, you can explore the island to your heart’s content – whether you want to run, swim, or dive, the choice is yours.
The reaction from other Wii fans was incredible. None other than Twitter user @WuhuIslandFan react to the news of the game’s launch, pretty, er, succinct. “I’m going to shit my pants,” they announce. See, this is a big moment for them.
The creation is certainly a lovely way to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Wii Sports Resort, and as AtomicLugia says, Wuhu Island is truly “probably one of the most memorable locations” Nintendo has ever created. They add, “Although we rarely see this beloved island these days in the Switch era, it will always hold a place in our hearts.”
