The New York Mets have struggled with countless injuries throughout the roster during the 2024 season, but despite all of that, the Blue and Orange are still in the race for the playoffs as they currently sit in the last wildcard spot with a record of 61-55.

The organization will bring back several players from the injured list over the next few weeks and on Saturday activated a standout relief pitcher from the 15-day injured list.

According to Tim Britton of The Athletic, the Mets plan to activate relief pitcher Reed Garrett from the 15-day injured list on Saturday.

Garrett has been out of action since early July after leaving a game against the Washington Nationals with tightness in his forearm and elbow. After imaging and a diagnosis of elbow inflammation, the 31-year-old was placed on the 15-day injured list.

Since returning to health, Garrett has made two rehab appearances with mixed results. The Virginia native’s first appearance was for Double-A Binghamton, where the right-hander struggled, recording just one out and allowing four hits, three runs and a walk on 25 pitches. However, the only out Garrett recorded came via a strikeout.

The 31-year-old was making his second rehab appearance when Garrett struck out three batters last Tuesday after pitching a scoreless sixth inning for Triple-A Syracuse.

The subsequent performance gave the organization enough confidence that he was ready to return to the bullpen, and since then his move to the Seattle team has been planned.

Garrett has pitched 42 innings out of the bullpen for the Mets in 36 appearances this season, compiling a 3.64 ERA and 1.429 WHIP while recording 63 strikeouts and four saves.

What does this mean for the Mets?

The Mets’ bullpen has performed much better recently as many new additions have adjusted to the blue and orange team, but Garrett’s return will still give the team a significant boost.
It is still unclear what role Garrett will play starting Saturday, but the 31-year-old should eventually return to the important role he had before his injury and play a key role in getting the ball to Edwin Díaz in the ninth inning.

The Mets have already won one of their trade deals until the end of the season
