9-year-old Pass Christian golfer lands in the top 10 in the world

PASS CHRISTIAN, Mississippi (WLOX) – Greatness begins at a young age. Nine-year-old golfer Charlie Magee had more success before age 10 than many who have ever picked up a club.

With more than 90 trophies to his credit, Charlie has established himself as one of the best young golfers in Mississippi golf history.

“I started playing golf when I was three years old. My dad played with his friends,” Magee said. “I went out with plastic clubs and just hit the ball. Then I got my first junior clubs. When I was five or six, I started taking lessons from my coach.”

“He started playing golf when he was six years old,” said Charlie’s father, Matt Magee. “In his senior year, he started scoring pretty low. His scores ranged from 32 4 under par to 30 6 under par.”

“I started working with him when he was six,” Cole Baggett said. “From the moment I started working with him, I knew he was going to be something special. He worked for it. It’s crazy to see a kid, especially a nine-year-old, work so hard. I’ve never seen anyone so eager to get on the golf course. You almost have to pull them off the course.”

After qualifying for the 2024 9A World Championships in Pinehurst, Charlie made his presence felt.

One place higher than the US Open, Passau native Christian finished in eighth place with the same number of points, cementing his position as one of the top ten players in his age group worldwide.

“He went from nine holes to eighteen holes,” Matt said. “The tournament was three days where he shot 74 on the first day, 2 over par, 68 on the second day, 4 under par, and 71 on the third day, 1 under par, 3 under par.”

“I got to caddy for him and it was so much fun. It’s cool to see him in his element,” Baggett said. “When he’s out there, he’s having a blast and you don’t see that. You see a lot of 9-year-olds doing it because they’re told to, but that’s not the case with him. He’s just a kid and he’s having a blast.”

“It was pretty cool. I learned a lot, that’s why I’m here today,” Charlie said. “It feels like I’ll be a pro one day, playing where they are.”

Golf is a family affair for the Magees. Charlie grew up at The Oaks Golf Club and his fondest memories are playing with his parents and siblings.

“My sisters have helped me, they’re really supportive,” Charlie said. “My mom does, too. My dad goes there with me almost every day. He takes me in a golf cart and just comes here while I hit balls for maybe an hour and thirty minutes, and he just helps me with my swing.”

Tournament after tournament, win after win, Charlie’s passion for the game is unmatched.

In short, Magee loves golf more than anything else. He spends at least five to six days a week on the golf course for two to four hours each day, which has allowed him to dominate not only kids his age, but also adults with more experience.

“He started beating me at seven,” Matt said. “I can’t get under par, so I don’t think I’ll catch him anytime soon.”

“I usually set a goal of maybe par or 2 under par,” Charlie said. “If I achieve that goal, I’m happy. If not, I go to the driving range afterward and work on achieving that goal.”

“I see greatness. We do drills all the time and Charlie doesn’t know it, but he blows me away every class,” Baggett said. “I’ve seen him do things I’ve never seen anyone do before, so it’s really cool to see that and he’s got a really bright future ahead of him.”

On Saturday, Charlie reached the third round of Drive, Chip & Putt, which will be held in Texas. If he wins there, he will compete for the championship at Augusta National.
