Brennan Barfield’s buck was in full bast

Brennan Barfield of Bennettsville, South Carolina, harvested an 8-pointer in Marlboro County on August 10, 2024, Youth Day in South Carolina Game Zones 3 and 4. The buck had a full set of velvet antlers and weighed about 180 pounds. The 9-year-old hunter harvested the deer at 7:45 p.m. from 180 yards with a CVA 6.5 PRC while sitting in a tree stand. The buck ran 20 yards before finally falling over.

Barfield’s father, Phillip Barfield, shares the details of the hunt here:

“We have observed eight to ten bucks on the trail camera and searched the bean field with binoculars over the last month. There were several good bucks that were using the bean field regularly. We had to move a stand to accommodate the south wind for the early season.

The only area we could set up a blind in that wind was about 200 yards from where the deer had entered the field, but we did what was necessary. We set up the blind the weekend before Youth Day and got it set up for the hunt. Fast forward to August 10th. We got to the blind around 6:30pm for the evening hunt. A couple of storms had passed through the area a little earlier, so the temperatures had dropped a bit and we had a nice breeze.

About 5 minutes after we settled in, several deer began to enter the field, three were young antlered bucks and the rest were does and yearlings. We watched them feed for a while, then they left the field. Around 7pm, the deer began to enter the field again. About 200 yards in, two mature bucks came across the field. One was a big 7 and the other a big 8. There were eight or ten more young bucks and several does and yearlings.

The center of the field is elevated so we could only see the neck and head of the adult bucks. We sat and watched them feed for 20 to 30 minutes before they made their way toward us. The two adult bucks eventually reached the hill 160 yards away so we could see most of their bodies. Brennan pointed his CVA 6.5 PRC at the rest and I watched through my binoculars as it unfolded. After the shot, the deer ran about 18 yards and fell into the beans. After all the other deer left the field, we dismounted and headed toward his Youth Day buck and began the celebration!”
