89-year-old hiker who had been missing for days is found safe and sound and brought home

CHALLIS – A missing 89-year-old Custer County man has been found safe and sound and has returned home, the local sheriff’s office said.

Custer County Sheriff Levi Maydole announced the good news on Facebook Sunday morning.

“Bing Olbum has been found and is at home. This is an extraordinary outcome of this incident! His camp was found late in the evening of August 10. Locals rode out and found him at around 12:30 a.m. on August 11. He was brought back home at around 3 a.m.

No details about Olbum’s condition were released.

Olbum left the Hunter Creek Trailhead in the Salmon-Challis National Forest on Tuesday, August 1. According to the sheriff’s office, he never reached his final destination at the end of the trail in the McDonald Creek area.

On Tuesday, August 6, he was reported overdue and missing by family members.

In the Facebook post, Maydole thanked the community for their “tireless efforts” in finding Olbum.

“Bing’s will to survive led to an incredibly happy ending to this incident. We hope he recovers quickly and can enjoy time with his family and friends,” the post said.
