A 79-year-old man was given aggression training following a dispute over a dog in Oxford Oaks.

Robert Gwynne Bailey of Oxford Oaks was allowed to enter into a pretrial intervention agreement in Sumter District Court earlier this month. If the Pennsylvania native complies with the terms of the agreement, he will not be charged with assault on a person over 65. The agreement requires him to complete eight hours of anger management and 80 hours of community service, although he can “buy his way out” of the community service for $10 an hour. He must also undergo a mental health evaluation and begin treatment if recommended. He is also prohibited from owning or carrying a firearm for the next 18 months.

A man said he was walking his dog in his golf cart on Boyd Circle in the family development off U.S. 301 around 7:30 p.m. on March 15 when another dog, belonging to Bailey, ran toward him, according to a Wildwood police report.

Bailey was leaving his home at 3332 Boyd Circle when he heard his dog barking. Bailey, who is 6 feet tall and weighs 240 pounds, approached the golf cart and pushed the other man to the ground. The other man, who is over 65 years old, said Bailey hit him “multiple times.” The other man grabbed his dog and fled in his golf cart. He called 911.

An officer went to Bailey’s home and noticed a surveillance system. The officer asked if Bailey would allow him to view the footage. Bailey agreed. The officer viewed the footage, which confirmed the victim’s version of events.
