5-year-old boy dies after shooting himself with his parents’ gun

SANTAQUIN, Utah (Gray News) – A 5-year-old boy in Utah accidentally shot himself with a gun he found in his parents’ bedroom, authorities say.

The shooting occurred around 2 p.m. Thursday near 780 South Canyon Road in Santaquin, KUTV reported.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the boy, identified as Brooks Wilson, suffering from a single gunshot wound.

Emergency personnel attempted CPR, but Brooks succumbed to his injuries. The boy’s father initially attempted CPR before emergency personnel arrived.

According to investigators, Brooks appeared to have grabbed the gun when the shot went off.

Officials said it was the boy’s father’s gun.

At the time of the shooting, both parents were in another room of the house, KUTV reported.

Santaquin Police Lt. Mike Wall said the shooting appears to have been accidental and there is no suspicion of foul play.

According to a GoFundMe page, Brooks was described as a cheerful and adventurous boy.

Brooks’ family released a statement urging other families to “ensure the safety” of their own children.

“The Wilson and Hunsaker families have experienced an unimaginable tragedy and lost a valued member who will be sorely missed,” the family statement said.

They continued: “Our hearts are broken and we hope that the loss of our family serves as a poignant reminder of how quickly life can change.”

No charges are expected to be filed.
