It’s Thursday, August 29, and here are five things you should know about Montgomery County.

1. Overdose Awareness Day: Today the county observes International Drug Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) and National Recovery Month.

2. MCDOT: The MCDOT Pedestrian Safety Team will be at the Strathmore, Grosvenor Metro Station in North Bethesda, MD 20852 at 4 p.m. to raise awareness of the Hybrid Pedestrian Beacons activated in the area.

A pedestrian hybrid beacon (PHB) is designed to help pedestrians safely cross busy roads by providing a protected crossing. When activated, the PHB displays a red signal indicating stopped traffic, allowing pedestrians to cross the road with a WALK signal.

3. Back to school campaign: 751 Twinbrook Pkwy from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

4. Food distribution: Kingdom Cares Food Distribution, Enclave Apartments, 11225 Oak Leaf Drive, at 5 p.m

5. In case you missed it: MCM stopped by Pine Crest Elementary School in Silver Spring on Monday as students, staff and officials rang in the first day of school with a street party.
