49ers News: Cutdown day is here

49ers rookie Pearsall returns to training with heavy workload

“Pearsall, however, got involved a bit on his third snap of 11-on-11 action when he blocked 49ers cornerback Darrell Luter on a running play.

Pearsall participated in nearly 20 plays of the 90-minute practice, which consisted of more than 60 snaps from scrimmage.

Within the first few minutes of practice, Pearsall caught a 15-yard pass from quarterback Brock Purdy near the sideline.

It was Pearsall’s only pass reception of the day. A few other passes intended for Pearsall either missed or deflected at the line of scrimmage.”

Rookie wide receiver Cowing gives the 49ers “explosive” punt return option

“Punt return is fun,,” Cowing said after practice on Monday. “I was first confronted with this in my third year of college.. I really focused on that my senior year of college and got really good at catching the ball. And then here, too, I kind of got really comfortable seeing the ball off the kicker’s foot and being able to track it, run to my spot and gather my feet a little bit. Then just playing fast, seeing what lanes they were creating, scoring fast and trying to score touchdowns.”

The rookie wide receiver also showed the importance of recognizing key signs that enable him to make an explosive run once he has the ball in his hands.

“The biggest thing I learned was that the top of the ball, when it bounces off the punter’s foot, tells you which way it’s going to go,” Cowing explained. “So if I see the top of the ball, whether it’s pointing up or down, I know roughly where the ball is going to land. I can sprint to that spot, get ready, get comfortable and then gather my feet, see the coverage out there, just go out there and try to make an explosive play.”

49ers 53-man roster projection: A surprise at tight end?

“I’ve changed that prediction several times. But I think Jake Tonges has played too well to be kept off this roster and that the 49ers still believe in Brayden Willis’ potential. Cam Latu? He hasn’t shown me any reason to stay on the roster. He misses blocks and is a drop threat. Willis misses blocks but has potential at fullback and at the run-after-catch. Tonges, on the other hand, does everything right. He’s not an elite athlete, but he has great hands and executes his tasks pretty reliably. He deserves a spot after his training camp.”

Predicting the 49ers’ roster before Tuesday’s 53-player cut (paywall)

“That’s either the brilliant gut instinct of a seasoned sportswriter or the aftereffects of the poke nachos he gobbled down in the Las Vegas press box on Friday night. Mordecai, the cannon-armed undrafted rookie, has made impressive throws in practices and preseason games and received a decent number of training camp snaps for a fourth-string player. He was endorsed by quarterbacks coach Brian Griese before the draft, and Griese, of course, did the same for Purdy in 2022 when the 49ers surprised by releasing Nate Sudfeld because they were secretly excited about pick No. 262. That’s not to say Mordecai is Purdy 2.0, but his 49ers pedigree combined with his skill set could lead a team to take a low-risk shot if the 49ers put him on waivers, preventing them from hiding Mordecai on the practice squad. It’s true that Shanahan has claimed that the competition for the backup QB position is neck and neck between Dobbs and Allen. But you don’t have to be a seasoned sportswriter to understand that NFL head coaches can spread false news.”

Young questions Williams’ exit timing as 49ers seek championship

“The (Super Bowl) window never closes, and it’s not going to close, but it’s getting tighter. Next year, it’s going to get tighter,” Young said on KNBR’s “Tolbert & Copes.” “So when the window is open like it’s going to be for some time now, everybody’s got to get on board. And that’s why Trent… I think he set the market (with his original contract). And I think (49ers CEO) Jed (York) and everybody else is willing to do that because he’s the best tackle in the league.

“And now you come back and say, ‘No, I want to re-decide because I can still get $8 million total, and I’m on my last contract and I’m getting old.’ It’s like, bro. Don’t you see what we’re trying to accomplish here?”

Darrell Luter Jr. of the 49ers could be a bridge to the team’s future as a cornerback (paywall)

“I was waiting for them to break up the group, and I don’t know what made me look at the quarterback,” Luter said Monday.

He had expected to see Peterman again. Instead, in the midst of the chaos of preseason games – which are more like practice for teams from a planning perspective – his eyes met Bradley.

“And I was like, ‘Man, I’m really going up against my ex-quarterback,'” Luter said. “It was crazy because during the game I completely forgot that he was the damn quarterback. It was a great experience.”

Why the 49ers released Thomas before the season finale and re-signed him

“Logan was not a guy we wanted to let go,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Sunday in a conference call with Bay Area reporters.

“He just had his injury and stuff. We had a few other issues with the squad and we told him that if we could get him back in the team beforehand, we would hire him back as long as he got healthy again.”

49ers roster cut tracker: Two RBs lead first 5 outs

“The 49ers announced that they have released two players, veteran running backs Matt Breida and Ke’Shawn Vaughn. They also waived three other players, punter Pressley Harvin, offensive lineman Lewis Kidd and wide receiver Jontre Kirklin.”

Report: Lamb and Cowboys agree to contract as Aiyuk-49ers saga continues

“The deal, which reportedly includes $100 million guaranteed and a $38 million signing bonus, makes him the second-highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.”
