ASHEVILLE, North Carolina (WLOS) — The Asheville Fire Department is honoring four women who worked together to save a man’s life in late May.

On August 15, firefighters at the Asheville Racquet Club presented them with awards for their quick and life-saving intervention.

The incident occurred at the same location when club member Dan Brooks stopped breathing, collapsed and lay on the floor without a pulse.

“Apparently I just fell over,” Brooks said. “The next thing I remember is waking up from the coma.”

While two of the women immediately called for help and 911, Stacey Lynch and club employee Kelsey Youngblood began CPR.

“I checked for a pulse and breathing, nothing. I just started CPR,” Lynch said.

Youngblood connected Brooks to an AED and he was brought back to life.

“I think we said he had a pulse. It was just a moment of relief,” Lynch said.

“It is because of your heroic actions on May 28, your quick response and your dedication to saving lives, that Mr. Dan Brooks is here with us today,” a firefighter said to all four women as they were presented with the awards.

Now these everyday heroes, together with the fire department, are reminding others to also undergo resuscitation training.

“If you know how to use a defibrillator and if you have training in CPR, anyone can do it. I think that’s a great message because the outcome couldn’t have been better,” Lynch said.

And as for Brooks, the word gratitude doesn’t even come close to expressing how he feels for these four women.

“We now have an even stronger bond with each other and therefore hug each other more often than before,” he said.
