A 39-year-old man died when he was struck by a car while apparently trying to cross Route 12 near Wauconda Wednesday evening, the sheriff said.
The Wauconda Fire District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one-vehicle crash with injuries in the area of Route 12 and Old Rand Road in the unincorporated community of Wauconda around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
When deputies arrived, they found a 39-year-old Arlington Heights man with serious injuries and no pulse, according to Christopher Covelli, chief deputy with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
A deputy performed CPR on the man, and the man’s pulse returned.
He was taken by ambulance to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, Covelli said.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a Toyota Camry, driven by a 68-year-old McHenry man, was traveling north on Route 12.
As the Toyota headed north, it appeared the pedestrian was attempting to cross Route 12 on foot, Covelli said.
The driver of the Toyota did not notice the man and hit him as he drove north.
The driver of the Toyota, who was still at the scene of the accident, was uninjured. The Toyota’s windshield was damaged by the impact.
Covelli said it is unknown why the pedestrian was crossing Route 12. The incident occurred in front of J&D’s Bar and Grill.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office is expected to perform an autopsy on the victim Thursday morning.
The coroner’s office is keeping the man’s name secret until after the autopsy.
The northbound lanes of Route 12 at Old McHenry Road were closed for several hours during the accident investigation.
The accident remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Accident Investigation Team.
