35-year-old Canton Township man shot dead in altercation with neighbors

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Michigan. – A man is in custody after shooting a 35-year-old man in Canton Township, according to police.

Canton Township police said the shooting occurred around 11:48 a.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2024, in a residential neighborhood in the 200 block of Cornell Street.

According to police reports, shots were fired after a brief altercation between the suspect and the victim. Both men live in the neighborhood.

When officers arrived, they found the 35-year-old man in the street with a gunshot wound. They took him to a safe location and he received medical attention from Canton Township firefighters and paramedics. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to police, the suspect barricaded himself in his home after the shooting. Officers managed to convince the man to surrender. The suspect is in custody.

Police have not yet released the victim’s identity and are still working to notify his family.

“This was a senseless act of violence against the victim,” said Canton Police Chief Chad Baugh. “The Canton Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and neighbors who may have witnessed this tragic event.”

The case will be referred to the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office for charging.
