3 stars for the Cleveland Browns in the preseason game against the Packers

It was nice to see football back on the field at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Saturday afternoon. As for the quality of football from the Browns’ perspective, that’s a whole different story. The Browns barely had anything going right against the Green Bay Packers. They had a ton of injuries, didn’t manage to get into the end zone until the end of the fourth quarter, and ended up losing 23-10.

The loss doesn’t matter in the preseason, but it’s just another reason why it was such a rough afternoon. Even though Cleveland didn’t have much to play for, there were a few players who deserved recognition.

The young kicker is back with the Cleveland Browns and got his first chance to kick in a preseason game since he struggled in preseason last year. That led to York being released and Dustin Hopkins being brought in as the new kicker. Hopkins had a career season and will be the starter again. York went from the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad to the New York Giants’ practice squad last year before returning to Cleveland this offseason.

Against the Packers, York got a chance at redemption when his first field goal was a long 55-yard kick. York stepped up and made the kick. Not only did he get the distance he needed with ease, but he looked good coming off his foot. York’s execution is a welcome sight, as he’s expected to be on the practice squad if Hopkins is ever out.

Bush played with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks before arriving in Cleveland. Now with the Browns, Bush is expected to be the third linebacker in the lineup. With Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and Jordan Hicks not playing in this game, it was an opportunity for Bush to prove he is still a top-notch NFL linebacker.

Bush was all over the field in the first half and seemed to constantly be looking for the ball carrier. Not only did the 26-year-old linebacker record two solo tackles and four assisted tackles for a total of six, but his power flashed when he set up 247-pound running back AJ Dillon just short of the first-down mark. It was a big play and perhaps one of the best moments of the afternoon.

The second-year quarterback from UCLA was a potential third quarterback on the 53-man roster alongside Deshaun Watson and Jameis Winston. DTR had an impressive second half, leading the Browns to their best offensive drive of the day. Thanks to his play in the fourth quarter, the Browns were finally able to reach the end zone.

Thompson-Robinson finished the game with 14 successful passes on 18 passing attempts for 134 yards. His leap near the sideline to avoid a tackle was also a signature moment, although it was a short gain.

While these three players receive the most credit in this game, rookie cornerback Myles Harden deserves an honorable mention. The seventh-round pick showed his ability as a willing tackler, which could be crucial not only for depth in the secondary but also for special teams kick coverage.

Despite some outstanding players, Cleveland will have to show much more in the second week of the preseason. The Browns host the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday, August 17th.
