The Italy Letters coverThe Italy Letters cover

The Italian Letters by Vi Khi Nao (Sapphic Fiction)

As the title suggests, this literary novel is told in a series of letters from the main character in Las Vegas to her lover in Italy, written in a beautiful, stream-of-consciousness style. The letters touch on betrayal, sex, the immigrant experience, class, and more. This is a sensual, surprising novella that is by turns funny, disturbing, and poetic.

How to leave the houseHow to leave the house

How to Leave Home by Nathan Newman (Queer Guy Fiction)

This 320-page novel is set in 24 hours of Natwest’s life as he waits for a “deeply embarrassing package” to be delivered to his home so he can intercept it before heading off to university. Meanwhile, we get glimpses into the minds and lives of the other characters in his life, from a dentist pursuing his dream of becoming an artist by painting human mouths to an imam tormented by his complicated relationship with the vicar. This promises to be an “incredibly funny and tenderly moving” story that shows how we are all connected.

A Summer in Miami CoverA Summer in Miami Cover

A Summer in Miami by Amber Rose Gill (F/F romance)

You may know Amber Rose Gill as the winner of the fifth season of Love Island, but she’s also a romance novelist. This is her second novel, and it’s about Kya, who is working flat out to make it in the tech industry in Silicon Valley. She finally takes a break and goes on holiday to Miami… only to find out on the flight there that she’s been fired. In a bar in Miami, she meets Jade, a DJ who leads a very different life. It was supposed to be just a summer fling, but things quickly get complicated.

The Palace of Eros by Caro De Robertis (non-binary mythological retelling)

Caro De Robertis is a popular author of queer literature, including Cantoras. In their latest book, they retell the Greek myth of Psyche and Eros. Psyche is tied to a rock by her father to be sacrificed to the gods, but Eros—the nonbinary deity of desire—saves her instead and hides her in an idyllic palace. There, they fall in love during the nights they spend together, even though Eros must fly away every morning. But Psyche begins to doubt Eros, forcing her into a reckoning that could change the worlds of gods and mortals.

In fact, there are two queer retellings of the myth of Psyche and Eros this week, so be sure to check out K. Arsenault Rivera’s “Oath of Fire” too!

The Guardian of the Phoenix by SA MacLean (F/F Fantasy)

Fans of queer cozy fantasy need to keep this one on their radar! Aila is the phoenix keeper at a magical zoo. She’s trying to raise funds to restart the breeding program to save this endangered species, but to do so she must enlist the help of know-it-all griffin keeper Luciana – and Luciana thinks the phoenixes should perform instead. As poachers and other threats close in, Aila must fight for the future of the species.

This book seems tailor-made for me! I love lesbian cozy fantasy novels and am always looking for more fantasy books about magical/fantasy/mythological animals. I am so excited to read this book.

Key Lime Sky by Al Hess (non-binary science fiction)

Speaking of cozy fantasy, can I interest you in a cozy sci-fi book? Denver Bryant is nonbinary, autistic, and loves cake. When he witnesses a UFO explosion that no one else seems to have noticed, he begins documenting the strange happenings in town on his cake blog. The blog’s popularity skyrockets, and he begins researching to get the answers his readers crave. When people start disappearing, he teams up with handsome bartender Ezra to stop this strange invasion before it’s too late.

Time’s Agent by Brenda Peynado (Sapphic Science Fiction)

In this eco-fiction novella with anti-capitalist claims, pocket worlds were supposed to be the answer to humanity’s problems – but now they are strictly controlled by corporations. Raquel and her wife Marlena’s hopes of this discovery are destroyed, as is their relationship. Marlena now lives in a pocket world that Raquel wears around her neck. They no longer speak to each other. But Raquel is not finished fighting for a different future.

The Dark We Know by Wen-yi Lee (Bisexual Teen Horror)

Isadora Chang fled her hometown of Slater as fast as she could. Being bisexual in a small town was hard enough, but when two of her friends died, she left before she became the next victim. When her abusive father dies, she reluctantly returns, just long enough to claim the inheritance. That’s when she meets Mason, her last living childhood friend. He tells her that her friends were murdered by an evil in Slater and he needs her help to stop it. Isa can’t really say no, because Slater won’t let her go. She starts hearing things in the wind, and her sketchbook fills up with disturbing drawings she doesn’t remember making…

Manboobs: Memoirs of Musicals, Visas, Hope and Cake by Komail Aijazuddin (Gay Memoirs)

“What do you do when you’re too gay for Pakistan, too Pakistani to be gay in America, and you’re ashamed of your body everywhere you go?” In this autobiography, Komail Aijazuddin recounts how he left Pakistan for the US in the hope of being accepted – only to find that while he found a gay community, he also faced racist hostility in post-9/11 America. Caught between two worlds, he works to create his own space where he belongs.
