GEORGETOWN, Del. (WPVI) — A volunteer firefighter in Delaware died Tuesday while responding to a car crash.

State police said Wednesday that 23-year-old Thomas Berry III, who worked for the Georgetown and Ellendale fire departments, was killed in the incident.

It occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. on the Lewes-Georgetown Highway west of Gravel Hill Road in Georgetown, Sussex County.

Police said a Chevrolet Malibu was driving behind a Toyota Camry when the Malibu attempted to pass the Camry.

When the Malibu got back into the lane in front of the Camry, investigators say the car struck the side of the car, left the road and crashed into a power pole.

According to police, Berry stopped after the accident to help the drivers involved.

While I was helping the driver in the Malibu, the power pole broke off, tearing down power lines.

According to police, Berry suffered life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

According to authorities, the driver of the Malibu, a 37-year-old man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The driver of the Camry, a 54-year-old woman, was not injured in the incident.

The Lewes-Georgetown Highway was closed for approximately 12 hours while the accident scene was investigated.
