Police have arrested a 21-year-old woman suspected of stabbing her former roommate to death in downtown Spokane on Sunday night.

Lavender L. Port is charged with first degree assault.

According to a Spokane Police press release, officers responded to a 911 call about a stabbing in the 100 block of West Second Avenue at 11:30 p.m. Sunday. Police found paramedics treating the injured man, who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The stabbing victim told police he happened to encounter Port and another man, both of whom were former roommates of the victim, near the Browne Street Viaduct, court documents show.

The two former roommates confronted the victim, and the male roommate hit him twice and said he wanted his belongings. The victim told police the landlord had thrown the items away.

The victim threw his backpack in Port’s direction and demanded that the man compensate her for the discarded items, he told police. Port took a 6-inch knife from the backpack and stabbed the victim in the left chest, the news release said.

According to documents, the victim ran to an ambulance in a nearby parking lot.

Police found Port on Monday and arrested her on suspicion of assault.

Port is scheduled to make her first appearance in Spokane County Superior Court on Wednesday. She was still in Spokane County Jail on Tuesday.
