2024 Mississippi State Football Awards Tracker: Watchlists

2024 Mississippi State Football Awards Tracker: Watchlists

Let’s face it, Mississippi State’s football team isn’t exactly known for winning national individual awards. Jonathan Banks, who won the 2012 Thorpe Award as the most outstanding defensive back, was a major exception, but that’s pretty much where the list ends.

However, the Bulldogs have been in the running for numerous awards over the years. For example, quarterback Dak Prescott was a finalist for the Maxwell Award in 2014, one of the three most important player of the year awards alongside the Walter Camp Award and the Heisman Trophy.

It will take a lot of effort for Mississippi State to end its losing streak in 2024, especially under the leadership of a new head coach, but here is a list of candidates in the running once the preseason watch lists are announced:

Biletnikoff Prize

Kelly Akharaiy was placed on the watch list on August 7.

Last season, he led UTEP in receiving yards (1,033), yards per game (86.1), receptions (48), receiving scores (7) and yards per catch (21.5).

The Biletnikoff Award recognizes the most outstanding FBS receiver of the college football season, regardless of position. Any player, regardless of position (wide receiver, tight end, split end, inside receiver, slot back or running back) who catches a pass is eligible for the award.

Hornung Prize

Kevin Coleman was placed on the watch list on August 1.

The Paul Hornung Award is presented annually by the Louisville Sports Commission (LSC) to the most versatile player in college football.

Last season, Coleman recorded 26 catches for 362 yards and two touchdowns for Louisville and ran 26 times for 117 yards.

Dice Trophy

Nick Barr-Mira was placed on the watch list on August 1.

Barr-Mira has made 40 appearances, including 32 for UCLA, and has made 36 career field goals, including a career-high 49 yards.

The Dice Prize is awarded for community service.

This story will be updated as more watchlists are released throughout August.
