2024 CrossFit Games confirm athlete’s death after Lazar Dukic disappears in water

Organizer of the CrossFit Games 2024 have confirmed the death of an unnamed participant a few hours after the disappearance of Serbian athlete Lazar Dukic while swimming in Marine Creek Lake in Texas.

Dukic disappears into the water in the all-around competition

As Anabel Ávila, an internet personality who provides news about CrossFit, reported, Dukic’s whereabouts were unknown after he disappeared on the opening day of the CrossFit Games, during an event that included both running and swimming.

After she had only a short distance left in the swimming section and was among the leaders, Dukic did not cross the finish line and struggled in the water in clips from a live stream of the event shared on social media.

Rescue team retrieves body from water

Dukic’s team immediately informed the organizers of the CrossFit Games when he failed to emerge from the waters of Marine Creek Lake in northwest Fort Worth.

Following multiple reports that Fort Worth Fire Department personnel pulled a body from the water following a drowning incident, the CrossFit Games confirmed that an athlete had died at the event, but did not release a name.

Statements from CrossFit and Fort Worth Police

CrossFit is deeply saddened by the death of one of our athletes during the swim portion of our event this morning“ said Don Faul, CEO of CrossFit.

“We are cooperating and working very closely with the authorities in the further investigations.”

Leah Wagner, a spokeswoman for the Fort Worth Police Department, said The athlete’s name will not be released “until the Tarrant County Coroner has an opportunity to speak with the family. and verify the name and identity of the athlete.
