In a shocking incident, a two-year-old child accidentally shot a man in a home in Chesterfield County, Virginia, on Monday morning. According to ABC NewsThe child gained access to a weapon and accidentally shot the man, who was then left in critical condition.

The incident occurred on August 19, when police responded to a reported shooting at a residence in the 4400 block of Butler Lane around 10 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately provided medical attention. The man was subsequently flown to the hospital for further treatment.

Chesterfield Police later confirmed some details to CBS 6 News.

“It appears that the following events occurred: The victim was about to leave the house and had placed his gun on a nearby chair when a nearly three-year-old child took the gun. The child accidentally fired a shot from the gun and shot the victim. The child was not injured and no one else in the house was injured. The investigation is ongoing,” said a Chesterfield police spokesman.

According to the ABC affiliate in Virginia WRIC, The victim is the child’s mother’s boyfriend.

Neighbor Lisa Wood said she saw the child shortly after the shooting.

“After I entered the house, he was sitting there like a normal child. He’s not worried or anything. He’s still smiling,” she said.

Other neighbors who CBS6 expressed their wish for the victim’s full recovery and agreed that the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of firearm safety measures.

“If you’re not responsible with your stuff, bad things happen. And it’s really, really upsetting that it had to be a child. And, you know, hopefully this adult will handle it, because, like – that’s upsetting. Today was just a day, you know, that wasn’t good,” Ms. Wood said.
