2 dead in traffic accidents in Aiken, Orangeburg County

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC (WRDW/WAGT) – Two people have died in separate traffic accidents in Aiken and Orangeburg counties.

In North Augusta

A man has died in Aiken County after being hit by a trailer in North Augusta.

According to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office, the incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. Friday in the 6000 block of Northside Drive.

According to the press release, the victim was sitting in the back of a truck when he fell and was hit by the trailer being pulled by the truck.

Rescue workers took him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m., authorities said.

The Aiken County Coroner’s Office, along with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, continues to investigate.

Coroner Daryl Ables says he will release the victim’s name once the family has been notified.

An autopsy has been scheduled in Newberry.

In Orangeburg

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating after one person was killed in a single-vehicle crash.

According to police, a 2021 Toyota Camry was traveling north on Highway 301 near Legrand Smoak Road, less than two miles west of Cordova, around 5 a.m. Saturday when it veered off the right side of the road and struck a utility pole.

The driver succumbed to his injuries sustained in the accident at the scene.

The Orangeburg County Coroner has not yet released the victim’s identity.
