19-year-old woman shot dead in northeast Fresno identified

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The woman shot and killed in northeast Fresno over the weekend has been identified as 19-year-old Aaliyah Bonman.

“Aaliyah had a lot of energy and was a tough girl,” said Megan Gauna, Bonman’s mother.

The shooting occurred before 3 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, near Cedar and Nees.

According to officials, Bonman was involved in a fight with 21-year-old Penelope Mehr when Mehr pulled out a gun and shot Bonman.

“You never know who you’re going to encounter and if the person is carrying a weapon, whether it’s a gun, a knife or something else. I think the days of just getting into a physical fight are probably long gone,” said Fresno police Lt. Paul Cervantes.

Bonman was found in the parking lot of a Rite Aid store.

She was taken to St. Agnes Hospital where she died.

Her mother says Bonman was the youngest of three children and her only daughter.

Bonman worked as a nail technician and dreamed of attending nursing school.

Gauna says her daughter’s best quality was that she always helped her friends.

“Simply loving and with a bright future. Everyone and everything was very important to her,” said Gauna.

On Sunday, undercover officers found Mehr near Second Street and Jensen Avenue, where she was taken into custody.

She was booked into the Fresno County Jail on murder charges.

According to police, 18-year-old Nevaeh Solomon Mehr helped with the shooting. An arrest warrant has been issued against her for aiding and abetting a crime.

“If Nevaeh Solomon sees this, do everyone a favor and turn yourself in. We don’t want anyone else to get hurt,” said Lt. Cervantes.

Through memorial services and vigils, Bonman’s mother now tries to keep her daughter’s memory alive.

“I love her and wherever she is, I hope she is surrounded by her loved ones and walks in peace,” Gauna said.

This was the 21st murder in Fresno in 2024.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact Fresno Police.

To help Bonman’s family during this time, a GoFundMe account has been set up.
