19-year-old charged with assault after shooting in Wagener

WAGENER, SC (WRDW/WAGT) – A 19-year-old has been charged with assault/attempted murder in connection with a shooting this week, Wagener Police Chief Mark Warchol told us Wednesday.

According to the Wagener Police Department, Wagener Police officers responded to a shooting on Church Street near Haley Stone on Monday, August 12.

Officials said police located one of the suspected shooters and attempted to speak with him when the suspect ran off Main Street near Pickens.

As police pursued the suspect, they saw him throw a firearm into a bush as he fled, authorities said.

The perpetrator was arrested without further incident, police said.

The gun was recovered and the suspect was taken to Aiken Regional Hospital to be treated for injuries sustained while jumping over a chain link fence, officials said, before being taken to the Aiken County Detention Center.

No one was injured in the shooting. Officers from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office and Perry Police Department also assisted in the incident.

According to the Wagener Police Department, the incident is still under investigation.

Chief Warchol confirms that 19-year-old Napolean Elmore of Salley has been charged with assault/attempted murder and possession of a weapon/pointing and presenting a weapon at a person.
