17-year-old shot himself after a young boy died while playing with a gun in an Arto Street apartment, Houston police said

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – According to police, a teenager and a child died within minutes of each other at a tragic location in north Houston on Wednesday evening.

This all happened after a group of children were reportedly playing with a gun.

Investigators said the child, who was only 10 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 17-year-old who brought the gun into the house died at the hospital after shooting himself, according to HPD.

A group of children, ages 10 to 17, gathered at an apartment complex in the 6200 block of Arto Street, near Hardy Street. Police believe they are all related.

According to HPD, the weapon appears to have been brought by the 17-year-old, who likely demonstrated it.

Another youth in the group was holding the gun when a shot accidentally went off at around 8:20 p.m. and hit the child, who was subsequently killed, police said.

The 17-year-old then grabbed the gun and ran into a wooded area near the complex. Family members reportedly tried to talk to him because he was upset.

Officials said the teen fired several shots. One of them hit the apartment complex, but no one was injured. He then turned the gun on himself.

There are still many unanswered questions in the investigation, including details about the weapon.

“As for the gun, we are not sure if it was in the house or if the person was carrying the gun himself. We are conducting an investigation in that case as well,” said Asst. Chief Keith Seafous.

HPD reminds all gun owners to properly store and lock up their guns to prevent them from falling into the hands of children.
