15-year-old charged after 18-year-old injured in shooting

According to Sumter Police Department spokesperson Tonyia McGirt, a 15-year-old is in custody after an 18-year-old was injured in a domestic violence-related shooting on Wednesday afternoon, August 14.

Officials found the injured teenager on Ash Street and he was flown to a Columbia hospital, where he was in stable condition Thursday morning, a news release said.

According to information gathered, the 18-year-old was reportedly parked in front of a residence on Barwick Street when his vehicle was shot at. He attempted to drive away but caused an accident and ran into Ash Street, where he was found by police officers dispatched to the scene.

The 15-year-old reportedly fled from Barwick Street and was found and taken into custody by police.

The 15-year-old was charged with attempted murder, possession of a handgun by a person under 18 and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. His name is not being released due to his age and he is being held at a state child welfare facility.



Sumter Police are currently investigating.
