13-year-old shot dead in shootout between two minors in East Austin

Austin police have arrested two minors for their alleged involvement in a recent shooting that left a 13-year-old dead.

The shooting occurred on Thursday, August 22, around 8:35 p.m. in the 6300 block of Thurgood Avenue.

According to police, the 13-year-old and another minor drove in a stolen car to meet another minor with the intention of robbing them, which led to a shootout between all three.

The 13-year-old was shot and pushed into the back seat of the suspect vehicle. According to APD, the minor who was with him drove away from the scene and the force hurled the 13-year-old from the back seat onto the sidewalk.

The other juvenile involved fled the scene on foot, but was eventually arrested and charged with capital crimes. The other minor was also arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

This case will be investigated as the 40th murder in Austin in 2024.
